They put out an EP in 2013, which was great, but I hadn't heard from them again until recently. They finally released their full length album, <i>You Haunt Me</i> last fall. It's a fantastic album that has a nice blend of pop sounds with indie and electronic influences. I'm loving it. Here are some of my favorites:<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Easy Now" (not actually on the album, but an earlier release that I LOVE)</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SwbrQSssFEU" width="560"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
"Too Far Gone" (my favorite song on album)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/mn3F1gt71QA" width="420"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm obsessed with 2:15-2:40</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
An excellent remix of "You Haunt Me", by AMTRAC</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/INTe594lJw0" width="560"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Anyway, these guys are great. Give them a listen to and let me know what you think. Sometimes they kind of remind me of an Islandic band I like, Kent, but more toned down and indie.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Oh, and rumor has it that Sir Sly's drummer is a "never-nude," at least according to their Wikipedia page <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Sly" target="_blank">here</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

Nancy and I went to see it over the holiday break and we both really enjoyed it. The story is kind of messed up and depressing at the end, but overall it's a very fun experience. Many of you have heard the music from its long run on Broadway, but I wasn't too familiar with many of the songs. They are great!<br />
<br />
Any favorites? Nancy and I really like "Giants in the Sky," "Agony," and of course the prologue.<br />

Things have been crazy since starting grad school and I just haven't taken the time to keep this up. Here's another go at it.<br />
<br />
Here's a playlist of some of the songs that I have been listening to a lot lately. There was so much good music that came out in 2014. Many of the songs on this playlist were released in 2014 or 2013 since the last post on this blog. Anyway, so much more than this, but here is a flavor of what I've been chillin' to recently.<br />
<br />
Let me know what you've been obsessed with recently! I need more. Dave has graciously introduced me to a few lately...keep 'em coming Dave! Anyone else?<br />

Life just gets so busy I haven't even really had the chance to check out some new music. But I decided to break my silence by sharing with you a band called The Dig. <br />
This song is called "break the silence" ... see what I did there. This is a great song.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/jDKg2mH2-1s?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
Another great song here from their Album- Midnight Flowers- This is called "I already forgot everything you said"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have been swamped at work lately! I'm losing my mind. The Strokes are the only thing to ease the pain sometimes.<br />
<br />
Have y'all heard the album they released earlier this year? Very choice. I like every song on this album. Some of my favorites, however, include "One Way Trigger," "Partners in Crime," and "Happy Ending." Like I said though, I like every single song. Have a listen mates!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="380" src="https://embed.spotify.com/?uri=spotify:user:lanceclark:playlist:0ZkaX4QK2yXdGYrBk80i8X" width="300"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Basically, I think most of what Julian Casablancas (lead singer in The Strokes) does is pretty awesome. Have you heard his collaboration with Daft Punk in their latest album? Well my friends, it is worth every second to listen. I had this song on repeat for weeks when it first came out. In fact, I have learned how to play this song on the guitar. Very fun.</div>

He draws an obvious comparison to Bon Iver. This guy is just a musical genius though. He does it all- Sings, Guitar, Percussion, piano, Banjo, Mixing, THE HARP, etc. <br />
<br />
This is one of my favorite tracks- Australia<br />

<br />
Another great song- Monsters. Banjo and Dubstep! amazing.<br />

That song is the only one most people know, and most everyone I talk to thinks of Bobby McFerrin as a one-hit wonder. I'm not sure how I discovered the REAL Bobby McFerrin, but I have always been grateful I did. There are few artists over the years that have compelled me to buy all their albums. (Toad the Wet Sprockett, Duncan Sheik, etc), and Bobby McFerrin is one of them. So, I am a happy person right now - Bobby McFerrin has a NEW ALBUM!!<br />
<br />
Now, since most of you are not familiar with how diverse and wildly talented this man is, I am going to introduce you to him a bit more and encourage you to go find more of his music on Spotify, Grooveshark, or whatever your favorite music service is.<br />
<br />
What you may not know, is Bobby comes from a family of music. In fact, his father, Robert McFerrin, was the first African-American to sing with the Metropolitan Opera in NYC. Bobby had been putting out music for several years before his grammy-winning, #1 song, "Don't Worry Be Happy". In fact, his first album was in 1982. Now, as I provide some samples, you will see how amazing a vocalist and musician he is. Enjoy...<br />
<br />
DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY (album: Simple Pleasures, 1988)<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/d-diB65scQU?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br />
<br />
Bobby is amazing with his range and his ability to mix in his own percussion sounds. Truly amazing stuff.<br />
<br />
THINKING ABOUT YOUR BODY (album: Spontaneous Inventions, 1986)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<object class="BLOGGER-youtube-video" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0" data-thumbnail-src="http://img.youtube.com/vi/_4BhsYbXwf4/0.jpg" height="266" width="320"><param name="movie" value="http://youtube.googleapis.com/v/_4BhsYbXwf4&source=uds" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><embed width="320" height="266" src="http://youtube.googleapis.com/v/_4BhsYbXwf4&source=uds" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
<br />
<br />
His range in musical tastes and ability is incredible and is partly why he has collaborated with some fo the best musicians in the world...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/5jmjBXoyugM?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
I really like his more recent stuff as well...<br />
<br />
SAY LADEO (album: Vocabularies, 2010)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<object class="BLOGGER-youtube-video" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0" data-thumbnail-src="http://img.youtube.com/vi/b__9YQLJSZo/0.jpg" height="266" width="320"><param name="movie" value="http://youtube.googleapis.com/v/b__9YQLJSZo&source=uds" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><embed width="320" height="266" src="http://youtube.googleapis.com/v/b__9YQLJSZo&source=uds" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
<br />
<br />
And I think his concerts would be AWESOMELY FUN!!<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/PgvJg7D6Qck?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br />
<br />
And if you want to get a real picture of his talent and person, check this one out...<br />
<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/ktotbE4rN2g?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe><br />
<br />
<br />
Ok, I'll end with this one, which I think is one of my favorites of his...<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<object class="BLOGGER-youtube-video" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0" data-thumbnail-src="http://img.youtube.com/vi/9NdlGjkZ_6I/0.jpg" height="266" width="320"><param name="movie" value="http://youtube.googleapis.com/v/9NdlGjkZ_6I&source=uds" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><embed width="320" height="266" src="http://youtube.googleapis.com/v/9NdlGjkZ_6I&source=uds" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></div>
<br />
From classical to jazz to pop and everything in and out of those boxes, Bobby Mcferrin has done it. From working with Chick Corea, Yo Yo Ma, Robin Williams, Esperanza Spalding, and many many more, Bobby has for decades been one of the greatest voices and musicians in he world - and I am thrilled to hear and enjoy his new album "Spirityouall". I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.<br />
<br />
PS - I had to add this one in. It's from one of my favorite albums of Bobby McFerrin: Paper Music. By the way, he not only conducts this, he is the soloist. amazing.<br />
<br />

Their lead (David) is so so talented in creating music but his voice is beyond terrible. It is the worst voice out there. But he has some ladies (amber to be specific) that when they sing Dirty Projectors are awesome. This is one of those great songs... creative music, beautiful singing. <div>

Last February I finally had a chance to see Radiohead in concert. Here is one of the new songs they performed, which I really hope gets put onto a future album. Best concert I've ever been to!!!</div>

They only have an EP released right now but I really like all of their songs. This is the song that got me hooked. I love how simple this song is. "Go Home" This is just really good. Nothing more to say.<br />

This is a song from Chvrches. Yes, with a V. Apparently it was to make them stand out on online searches. It is called "Recover". This is a very nice Pop song. <br />

I thought it was really fun music to listen to, it was different, and the whole album was good song after another. Their second album was just okay... I didn't have it on repeat much at all and I thought... Well they were cool for a bit. But, this just came out- a single for their newest album. I think it is awesome. Hopefully this is a good sign for the new album.<div>

It is the emergence of a number of amazing singer who all excel at serenading in a falsetto voice. Personally, I love it. So, this post I thought I would feature a couple of songs from my favorite high pitched crooners, some old timers and some new ones...<br />
<br />
ARTIST # 1: James Vincent McMorrow<br />
Album: Early in the Morning<br />
Song: Higher Love<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/mvfJFvbTnMc?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
Love this song (it's the first song in this video). Love this artist. There is something nice about the vulnerable, imperfectness of his voice. He is great at phrasing and creating a mood for the song. Definitely a winner. Listen to the second song in the video to get a further taste or check out his album on your favorite music service.<br />
<br />
ARTIST # 2: Bon Iver<br />
Album: Bon Iver<br />
Song: Holocene<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/TWcyIpul8OE?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
Oh my holy wow. Seriously. No matter how many times I hear this song, I still get chills. Bon Iver (real name is Justin Vernon) has been around a long while, but last year he surprised a bunch of folks and got himself two Grammys as "Best New Artist" and "Best Alternative Album". And deservedly so. Need more proof of greatness? Check out ths next song, called, "I Can't Make You Love Me"...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/Q3VjaCy5gck?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
ARTIST #3: Alek Fin<br />
Album: Mull - EP<br />
Song: Waiting Like Wolf<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/ImUj95Un52Y?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
This is a new, emerging artist. Reminds me A LOT of Radiohead - with a new twist. I love this guy's music. He's not always in falsetto, but he is a lot and it's a smart falsetto. You really should check out his 2010 album, "Better When Seen From Above". I am hoping to see a bunch more music from this guy soon.<br />
<br />
ARTIST #4: James Blake<br />
Album: Retrograde<br />
Song: Retrograde<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/6p6PcFFUm5I?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
I know, i know, Lance featured this already...BUT WHO CARES!! It had to be included in this theme. James Blake is pretty well known to many music fans, but seriously, his music isn't getting old any time soon. This song is a smart vocal with cool lyrics. Sit back and chill to his music all night!<br />
<br />
ARTIST #7: JT...Justin Timberlake<br />
Album: Justified<br />
Song: Cry Me a River<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/DksSPZTZES0?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
Like him or not, Justin Timberlake is doing amazing things with his music and this song was one of the first big songs that really showed his falsetto, I think. His falsetto is really smooth.<br />
<br />
<br />
ARTIST #6: Radiohead<br />
Album: In Rainbows<br />
Song: Nude<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/Zxvsq-IluaA?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
One of the best ever. what else needs to be said about a legend and a groundbreaking artist?<br />
<br />
ARTIST #7: Curtis Mayfield<br />
Album: Superfly<br />
Song: Superfly<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/-cmo6MRYf5g?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
Maybe the grandfather of the smooth falsetto, Mayfield was incredible. You have to pay homage to this guy!<br />
<br />
That raps it up for me. Now go listen to some more music!!<br />

This video is awesome. So is the song. It's called "Retrograde." It came out just a few days before the Russian meteor shower. Coincidence? Hmm...</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
James Blake sure does know how to make a lovely song. The first time I saw his face I thought, "THIS is James Blake?" I didn't think the voice matched his appearance. Now I can see it. I shall post more of his music at a future time. For now, just relax and enjoy this piece. I picked it out just for you.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
I know there is a TON of great music that comes out during a
year, but I expect the Grammys to be able to judge it better than it does
sometimes. However, I really think that the problem today is that unlike 20
years ago, we have SO much more amazing music getting made and exposed through
social music mediums and new music movements. It wasn’t long ago that really
only top 40 music was known – if you didn’t hear from a local stage or on the
radio, you simply didn’t hear it. YOU had to do all the work to find the music.
Today, it is a lot easier to find music to where the artists have mediums to
really expose their music to us. The beauty of it is that now we have much
wider/eclectic tastes in music than we all did 20 years ago.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Think about the Grammys on Sunday…<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Most people who listen to music were familiar with Taylor
Swift, Jay Z, Sting, Bruno Mars, Ziggy Marley, The Black Keys, Fun, and Mumford
and Sons. This is a pretty eclectic group of artists compared to what we would
have seen 20 years ago. So it creates a problem…a lot more bands competing for
the same awards in categories that are
more and more eclectic in nature and less and less meaningful. I mean, what is
“rock” anymore, versus alternative? At least R&B and Rap know what they are
and are pretty easy to spot.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
My point is…some amazing music and amazing artists get
completely missed. I’ll share with you just two of my favorites of 2012 that
could have easily won Album of the Year for me, that the Grammys missed out on.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
These two bands have albums chock full of great music. Not
just one or two songs that got really popular. I almost feel that the Grammys
now days are awards for best marketers + best music. Many people thought, for
instance, that Mumford & Sons’ win for album of the year was an upset (it
wasn’t). Part of that is because they just didn’t get how awesome their album
was, but mostly because peopled didn’t catch on to the fact that Mumford &
Sons is really, really great with their fan engagement through social media.
They are super savvy marketers through fan engagement. If you followed their
efforts in that realm, it wouldn’t surprise you that they won. That stuff
matters today. The two bands I am going to mention here, were not all that
great at marketing themselves – for various reasons. But, their music is still
amazing – and that is what the Grammys are supposed to be about. So here they
are:<o:p></o:p></div>

I first heard about First Aid Kit when they did a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMrqBldlqzA" target="_blank">cover</a> of one of my favorite songs from Fleet Foxes. I have followed them ever since. Their harmonies have always been great and this album does a good job at showcasing it. Maybe the most popular song on the album, Emmylou, blows me away. The last half of the song is incredible.<br />
<br />
Here is the official video for Emmylou:<br />

Especially when you get into the more pop country stuff. But I do like Country music. I may not be diverse in my country selection so I guess you could call it borderline folk/country but dang some of this genre is just amazing. <br />
<br />
Like this new Brooklyn Country Band. Yes. Brooklyn and Country. Its a thing. But my trusty sidekick Bob Boilen from NPR tipped me off on this little Gem of a group. Their Album comes out later this month and I am excited to check it out. This is The Lone Bellow. Vocals are amazing... especially around 3:00.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/Gsnrzr0Bm80?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
I am coming more and more accustomed to listening to what is classified as "Country Music" but maybe the country music scene -CMT and such is just recognizing good music as country now... examples would be the recognition that groups like The Avett Brothers and The Civil Wars are getting- both excellent groups.<br />
<br />
Here is another great song from The Lone Bellow.<br />
<br />

Her most recent album Biophilia, released in 2011, talks a lot about the universe and our relationship to it. Pretty weird stuff at times, but then again that is how she's been her whole career.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Check out one of her latest music videos from Biophilia. The song is called Mutual Core. It's awesome, especially when things get explosive. John loves this video too, since it is about tectonic plates and volcanoes. Watch until the end and you won't be disappointed. Great artistry here.</div>

The above song is from Twin Shadow. My good friend and work colleague Ben introduced me to these songs from Twin Shadow. I had heard some from their first album and didn't particularly like them but these are from their newest album Confess. It definitely has a retro vibe to it and is just an awesome old fashion like rock song. It makes me want to get on a motorcycle with a leather jacket and some leather chaps. <br />

Another GREAT track from the album. A little more 80's and a little less rock.Dave and Tanahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07469055537600837003noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8923067299428197930.post-40445147517066325642012-11-23T19:56:00.000-08:002012-11-23T19:56:47.919-08:00Hands of GloryIf you haven't heard Andrew Bird's newest album Hands of Glory, you are missing out. Bird goes back to more of his roots on this album and it's just so good. I wanna do a jig every time I hear these two songs:<br />
<br />
<br />
First one is called "Railroad Bill." I love the simplistic folk sound here.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
This second one is called "When That Helicopter Comes." When I am able to post playlists again using my Spotify, I'll share the recorded version. (blasted crappy laptop!) Awesome song.</div>
<br /></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Really, the entire album is solid. Hear it!</div>
